It's December, and the first snow of the year has fallen. In one lot of the old town, Hatsuyuki encounters a beautiful girl wearing a white dress. She's wandering the streets under the falling snow, in search of a rabbit.A few days later, the girl in the dress - Sakura - transfers into his school. To take Hatsuyuki along towards the last winter.

With the turn of the four seasons, 1095 days come to an end.Soon winter will pass, and spring will arrive.Embracing memories of snow that never accumulated, the youth stands perfectly still.

From the first snow (Hatsuyuki) to the cherry blossoms (Sakura), congratulations on your graduation.

OP Song:

Why are there are 3 OP Songs? I'm even surprised myself, so don't bother asking. Anyway, I've been trying to gather my thoughts to write this review. It's a little hard to write because... dammit, this game is so depressing. I don't care what depressing stories you guys have read so far, but for me... I'm really depressed after finishing the game. Don't judge the visual novel by it's cover. At first glance, you'll think this is just your typical “kyakyafufu” charage VN, but no, there's more to it than meets the eye. I regretted a bit why I didn't play this VN last year.

Moving on, it's really depressing. And it's not just the true ending, don't even dare get me started on Aya's route, and her second ending, dammit ;_; Don't expect a living happily ever after ending, crush that hope. Every ending you read will make you want to cry, punch someone(or your monitor), flipping table, or even jump out the window. If you can't accept bittersweet, and tragic endings, then stay away from this VN. But if you have balls the size of Mount Everest, then play the VN like the man you are, and welcome to the Zetsubou Club!

The story follows episodic format. They merged the prologue and common route in this VN, so you're technically free to follow available routes right after you finish the prologue. Three heroine routes are locked, so there's only two heroine routes available. Finishing one would unlock another one, and finishing all four would give you the last one, which is the true route. To be precise, you're semi-forced to play routes in order. So in the beginning, you're forced to play Ran's route(which isn't really Ran's route) after which you unlock the two available routes, Aya's and Yoru's route. Finishing Aya's route will unlock Nozomu's route, while finishing Yoru's route will unlock Shirokuma's route. Once you're done with all four heroine routes, you'll unlock bonus routes, and you're finally ready to start the most painful route. The true route “Graduation”, which is also Sakura's route.

As for the setting, it presents an interesting town called “Uchida Kawabe”, which is split between the New City(Uchida), and the Old City(Kawabe). The New City will be your mainstay almost all the time in the game. It's a modern-like town with just a fair amount of delinquents. The Old City on the other hand gives you an eerie feeling to it, like you're in ghost town. No people are normally seen in that area, so it's pretty much ruined, deserted, and abandoned because of reasons.

As I mentioned above, the story follows an episodic format. So the common route from each episodes focuses on introducing the heroines, and their problems. Not all heroines have introductory episode though, but gives us pieces of information from the setting to the main story. And finally the last episode which gives us a twist that will prevalent throughout the rest of the story.

Characters:

Kawano Hatsuyuki

Hatsuyuki is yet another one of the best protagonist in every VN I've read. He's far from your typical hetare, stupid, and donkan protagonist. He has a rather rough character, and isn't your usual nice guy. He has reputation of being called a delinquent with very good reasons, and definitely not the kind of you guy you'll mess up with in school, who can get his way just by staring at people. He mercilessly says whats on his mind, and often says I'll kill you whenever he's displeased or embarrassed. He gets into fight and punches anyone he doesn't like. He tends to drink sake despite being underage whenever he's depressed. The list just goes on.

His true identity is Ohno Yuuki, who died in the hotel explosion in the past. He is now resurrected as “King of Ghosts” or“Ghost Child” that is the leader of all the ghosts in the city destined to destroy the city at the end of winter, and vanishes along with it. He is the host to hundreds of ghosts who died in the hotel explosion infused with intense grudged, and hatred against the city by his father, and if the ghosts inside him aren't purged by the end of winter, he will become one of them and vanish.

Kozakai Aya

Aya is one year older than the Hatsuyuki, and works in the same cafe with him. She is currently a Ronin after failing her university entrance exam, working to pass the time. She used to be the student council president in Hatsuyuki's school, and was the perfect student everyone looked up to. But they met when she first worked in the cafe, which was after she graduated.

To be honest, Aya's route is the best in the game tied with the true route. Her story centered around the past, way back before the events of Hatsuyuki Sakura” started. It explained many things related to the main story. Lastly, her ending is the most tear-jerking out of all routes. I recommend you to not look forward to her ending in the true route if you were depressed by the ending in her own route; it’ll only make you even more so. There is no way I can bear that pain. Remembering this still makes me want punch someone, so I'll rather shed manly tears, and move on to the next heroine before I hurt myself.

Azuma Yoru

Yoru is Hatsuyuki's kouhai, one year younger. Inside the school, she's quite popular, and also the class representative of her class. Outside the school, she's an expert ice skater who practices on the skating ring everyday after school. She's so good at ice skating that she once competed in the world championship, but blew in the preliminary matches thanks to certain issues. What can I say? She's the ideal “kyakyafufu” heroine, she's really cute.

Yoru's route is centered around her past trauma surrounding the incident in her ice skating carrier. I really feel bad for Yoru, I mean she did nothing wrong, but her life was completely ruined due to malicious rumors, and misunderstandings. Yes, people can be such an asshole sometimes. Her route has a solid story but, not on the same quality as the Sakura's, and Aya's route. Her ending is one of the saddest “bittersweet” endings I've read so far though.

Shinonome Nozomu

Nozomu is the president of the guidance counseling committee, she's a freshman who's two years younger than Hatsuyuki. She's also to be the younger sister of the previous student council president, Sai, who is on a friendly term with Hatsuyuki. Nozomu admires Hatsuyuki, she looks up to him, and tries to be as manly as him to the point that she even uses boyish accent. I don't really like the energetic types, but she has a huge breast, so all is forgiven.

To be honest, her route is seemingly the most normal amongst all heroines. Her route isn't entirely that weak, but it has the least supernatural one. Her route mainly deals with helping, and guiding students to graduate. Not to mention it has of comedies that are genuinely funny. The greatest charm of her route is the final climax. On the bright side, her story is the only route with a HAPPY ENDING in this VN.

Shirokuma

Shirokuma is the newcomer employee of the cafe where Hatsuyuki and Aya works. She's the mysterious loli who claims to have come from Russia despite being not Russian. Shirokuma isn't her real name, but it's a nickname. Her real name matters not since everyone will always call her Shirokuma. She's a middle schooler going freshman, so it's still safe to say that this isn't jailbait. Who can resist this loli anyway? GURURURUSHIRO~!

Her route is somewhat unique as it's divided into two parts. The first part seems to have a half-assed overdramatized story. After the credits, the second part where the real story begins. The second part takes place about 3 years after the first part, so you can already say it bore the fruition to our loli. Her hair grew longer, she grew a bit taller, and she definitely have bewbs! Not that big though. I like her change in character. First part = Middle schooler Loli Shirokuma, Second part = High schooler DFC Shirokuma~ *drools*

Tamaki Sakura

Sakura is the true heroine of the story. She's also the first heroine you'll meet in the game. She's really attached to Hatsuyuki, and has a habit holding his hand because she feels that his hand is warm. She has a pet bunny named Nemu, a bit weird but she uses silly bunny personifications which includes a simple bunny, bunny copter, bunny beard, bunny muffler, etc. She is highly weak to ecchi talks, and prone to scream “pyaaa~ pyaaa~”, and escapes the scene whenever she hears it.

She has come to the town to search for the Ghost King, though she doesn't really know why she wants to meet with it. She just claim she's looking for someone, or something, and when she finds it, she will find what she really seek.

Sakura's true identity is actually Hatsuyuki's engaged bride who perished with him in the hotel explosion where their wedding was taking place in celebration of the union of the two towns(Uchida and Kawabe). Like Hatsuyuki, she too is a
“Ghost Child”. She returns as a ghost to keep watch over him, and is given a physical body to fulfill her dream of living together with him. In the ending, she convinced Hatsuyuki to live on as a normal person and vanishes. FUCK ;_; THERE GOES MY HAPPY ENDING!

TL;DR

I am honestly depressed right now. I enjoyed everything in the story, there are no regrets except having played it very late when I had all the time last year. It lives up to it's expectations as one of the Top VNs last year. Saga Planets truly didn't disappoint, and let us down. Highly recommended. Don't ask and just PLAY IT!
